A maximum 56 off-road vehicles are gearing up for Kenya’s wildest sports event – the Rhino Charge – on May 31, 2009. To find out more about the Rhino Charge, visit their newly launched website at www.rhinocharge.co.ke.
This extreme test of driving skills and physical endurance is recognised as the toughest off-road challenge in the world, but before the whacky-weekend of fun and madness in the bush there's another race: to raise the highest sponsorship.
For many months now, the five or six-man (in our case WOMAN) crews in each vehicle have been canvassing their friends, running fund-raiser parties, presenting to corporates, doing stunts and lobbying overseas donors to maximize the purse the event will generate for the epic “Aberdare Project” – a 400 km fence that will preserve the forest habitat and water catchment, and protect neighbouring farms from wildlife.
For 21 years in a row, Rhino Chargers have set ever higher fund-raising records. "It will be astonishing if that run is maintained in a year as difficult as this," said Rhino Ark Chairman Colin Church, "but this whole project is something of a miracle, so we live in hope."
With preparations of vehicles, equipment and crews for the Rhino Charge now at fever pitch, Clerk of Course Anton Levitan has announced that this year’s venue – a 40 sq km tract of uncharted wilderness - will be at least a six-hour drive from Nairobi. The exact location remains a secret until the day itself, when a race of a very different kind begins.
